PADI courses typically consist of theory and practice to achieve mastery. Because this is a professional certification that requires a commitment of 1-3 months, students must be on location in Puerto Rico. This course is intended to develop a knowledgable and skilled PADI professional with extensive experience and skills gained during the course, including in-water training dives, assisting instructors on PADI courses, gaining experience with equipment care, and working on boats.
Theory: PADI Divemaster candidates complete the PADI Divemaster e-learning at their own pace online in advance of scheduled in-water training. Candidates should dedicate extensive time to complete this professional training component, which includes online text and videos, knowledge reviews, and a final exam. The amount of time will vary depending upon student learning style and any personal challenges. (PADI states this e-learning course typically takes 15-20 hours.)
Open Water Dives: Students complete a scheduled series of in-water training, working closely with the Adventure Mermaid Crew instructors to complete required in-water training and to assist instructor courses, as required training.
Additional Training: Students should commit to learning everything possible about SCUBA operations if the intent is to work in the industry. Opportunities exist to increase job opportunities after or during this course by supplementing the course with specialty or other training, such as the Deep Dive Specialty, O2 Provider Specialty, Nitrox Diver Specialty, Equipment Technician courses, captain's license, or engine mechanic.
Time Commitment: Plan to complete the PADI Divemaster course over a period of 4-12 weeks. Those completely new to diving, should plan for a minimum of 12 weeks to complete required prerequisite certifications. Already meet all prerequisites? Plan for a minimum of one month to complete certification requirements.
Only serious applicants willing to commit to the duration of the course (1-3 months) on location in San Juan, Puerto Rico, should apply.

Each year, we encourage a few special guests to become professional SCUBA divers. We can assist a small number of candidates with demonstrated financial need by absorbing some costs or by fundraising in their name.
